DOMINICAN THEATRE PROUDLY PRESENTS:

FALL PLAYS

MYTHS AND HYMNS is a song-cycle which will be staged and performed featuring Greek myths found in an antique hymnal. It revolves around the relationship of Gods to humans, spirituality, past and present. The styles of music are musical theatre, jazz, gospel, and features individual stories and songs, as well as an ensemble.

METAMORPHOSES is a theatrical adaptation of the epic story written by the Roman poet, Ovid. Adapted and put into theatrical text by Mary Zimmerman, it is a collection of six Roman myths with a few others sprinkled in and offers individual scene work as well as a through-line of ensemble and storytelling. The stories told are Creation, used to explain the creation of the world, King Midas, Alcyone and Ceyx, Erysicthon, Orpheus and Eurydice, Pomona and Vertumnus, Myrrha, Phaeton, Apollo, Eros and Psyche, and Baucis and Philemon. The stories are beautiful, inspiring, passionate, funny, revealing, and extremely pertinent and relevant.

WINTER PLAY

TWO FROM GALILEE

by George Herman

December 3-6, 2009

In Nazareth, Mary marries Joseph over her mother's objections and with her father's approval. Then, old testament prophecies are fulfilled-- the virgin Mary conceives the child destined to be the Messiah. This immaculate conception is disbelieved by all and Mary is sent to her sister in Jerusalem who becomes convinced Mary's story is true. Meanwhile, God's messenger visits Joseph confirming Mary's story. She returns to Bethlehem where Mary and Joseph set up housekeeping. When Joseph goes to Bethlehem for the census, Mary insists going with him. There, Mary gives birth in the stable. Miraculous sights and sounds take place. And the three Magi-- while presenting gifts-- warn Joseph to go to Egypt until the danger is past.

A beautiful, dramatic telling of the nativity performed in the season of Advent.

INSPIRATIONS :  SPRING MUSICAL REVUE 2010

Dominican High School will stage a collection of dances and musical theatre pieces entitled, “Inspirations” from May 6-8.

One of the newest and most exciting theatre traditions the last two years at Dominican is its musical revue, INSPIRATIONS.   With a cast of over fifty and a crew of twenty-five, “Inspirations” is a compilation of dance pieces ranging from modern to ballet to jazz to hip-hop along with three collections of musical theatre pieces from selected shows.  The show is choreographed by Michael Endter, with musical direction and staging by Jeff Schaetzke and Michael Travia.

Past selections have included  dances by popular artists Rihanna and Pink, The Veronicas, Heather Headley, and Britney Spears.  There is also a “Bollywood”-style, group dance number from the movie “Slumdog Millionaire,” as well as a Fosse-style dance number.  There have been dance and musical selections from the musicals, “The Secret Garden,” “Songs For A New World,” “A Chorus Line,” “Altar Boyz,” and selections from various Bernstein musicals,  High School Musical 2, and many more.  The dance revue is open to all students and is an exciting way to spend the spring theatre season.

The Fine Arts Boosters (FAB) is a volunteer organization which supports Dominican High School’s award-winning theatre program through volunteer activities and fundraising efforts.  To learn more about upcoming and recent FAB meetings, or to get officer contact information, click here.

Let Your Light Shine!

Theatre Director Jeff Schaetzke leads the Dominican Theatre program. In his time at Dominican, Mr. Schaetzke has created an environment of excellence, community, cooperation and compassion, which stretches students to be the best they can be. Two theme statements best exemplify the Dominican theatre experience – one from the Bible and one from Konstantin Staninslavsky. The first comes from Matthew 5 in which Jesus tells the people, “You are the light of the world… let your light SHINE before men.” The second, from Russian theatre giant Staninslavsky, says, “Love the art in yourself, not yourself in the art.”

Get Involved

All shows are open audition. Auditions occur in late May for upcoming fall productions and in early December for the spring musicals. (See Calendar for more information.) Stage crew is open to all and there are sign-ups for each show at the beginning of each production process. Rehearsal times for actors are after school, usually from 3:15 p.m. to 5:45 or 6:00 p.m. Stage crew meets each week day except Wednesdays in the theatre from 3:15 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Friday gatherings sometimes go late with pizza and an evening movie or activity. For musicals, actors are called in the evening for dance rehearsals from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on selected nights.

Our stage crew is a vital and integral part of our theatre experience. Led by DHS Alum Bryn Van Beek, stage crew is responsible for the creation, building, execution, painting, constructing, wiring, lighting and running of each show. Students with or without experience have a chance to share their talents by painting, cutting, assembling, rigging, pulling curtains, running sound, hanging lights, running a spot light, finding props, designing and working back stage during a show. There is a camaraderie and pride in the stage crew that works with actors, directors and each other to put on the best show possible. With so many shows that incorporate technical elements, the stage crew’s work is equal to and sometimes above the creative work seen in professional productions.

At Dominican, we are committed to providing a wide range of theatre experiences for the actor, the singer, the technician, the set builder and the directors. In any four-year period, students can expect to work on a huge show, an intimate show, musicals from different styles, plays that make you laugh or cry, and continue to learn about different times and styles. Come join us for the experience of a lifetime!
