DHS Boys Soccer Eyes Special 2021 Season

The high school sports season is officially underway and the Dominican High School boys soccer team has sky high expectations for the 2021 season.

“Whole team goal is getting to the finals,” Bryan Jimenez said.  “State finals baby.  We are getting there.”

“Win conference, then set our minds to state.  Win every game,” Marco Luna said.

Those may sound like big goals at the start of the year, but the Knights are coming off a breakthrough season in 2020.  Dominican finished the year 10-5-1 and advanced to the WIAA regional finals.  It was the team’s highest win total since 2012.  One of those victories came against The Prairie School, who would go on to win the WIAA Division 3 state championship.

“First and foremost, it’s believing in ourselves.  We wanted to be a legitimate athletic program here,” Head Coach Leo Mironovich said.  “And believing in hard work as the only recipe to success.  That really began to propel us into a competitive team.

Dominican has a veteran group returning on offense and also brings back the starting goalkeeper.  The Knights do have to replace several key players on defense.  Coach Mironovich will rely on newcomers to fill in the gaps.

“It’s a group of players how have played together for several years now, who are passionate about the game,” Mironovich said.  “We have young guys who are hungry, ready to step into those positions and really do something special this year.”

The first step for DHS this fall is to compete for a Metro Classic Conference championship.  The last time the Knights won the league title was in 1987.  They finished third in the MCC last season.

“We play every team at a time.  We think about every team at a time,” Jimenez said.  “We don’t think about the future.  We play our game, play hard.”

Dominican won their 2021 season opener 5-2 against Milwaukee School of the Arts.  The team knows it’s a long season, and hope to get better each day.

“Am I better today than I was at the beginning of practice?” Coach Mironovich said.   “Am I better at the end of this game than when I started?  So ideally every single day we are different team because we are a better team, a more experienced team.”
